I think so. XD I had fun taking a photo of a regular guy in an angel costume and turning it into a very pretty-skiny-sparkling-angel boy glowing in the moonlight. Photomanip-Paintovers are lots of fun to do and they look way better than my illustrations from scratch. Weeeeeeeeee...
This process works better for be because I have something to work from. It's much easier for me to see an image and think of how I can make it "better." I have a clearer direction of where I am going to go with something that way, and can work much faster. When I work from scratch on a blank canvas, it's hard to stay focused, and having a final direction for the picture becomes nearly impossible, I can't keep the image in my mind. I lose sight of creating an image that works as a whole, in all the time I spend trying to fill in all the white space, and redrawing in an attempt to get the forms and shadows that look correct. I really need to take an anatomy class.
I'm hoping doing paintovers will improve my own skills. Since just painting over the photos does make me study the image and the human form more closely, and the difference in value. Dunno, I think and hope that as long as keep creating and experimenting my skills will improve.

I put a link to my deviations in my sig because I want people to look at them.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More

You say these look better than your from-scratch illustrations, but I bet doing these will also improve your skills in those!
